词汇 | child |
词源 | child. “A boy or a child, I wonder?” Shakespeare wrote in The Winter’s Tale (1610). In fact, as Ernest Weekley pointed out in An Etymological Dictionary of Modern English (1921), “my child in Shakespeare never refers to son,” for child originally meant a female infant in Anglo-Saxon, as it did in Middle English and in English dialect. See box; infant. |
