词源	pragmatism. Though William James was the great popular- izer of the philosophical doctrine of pragmatism, the word was coined in the 1870s by another philosopher, C. S. Pierce, from the Greek pragma, “a fact, a deed, a thing done.” Stressing the practical as opposed to the theoretical, pragmatism tests the truth and value of something by its utility and workability.
