poodle. Poodle, first recorded in 1825, is short for the Ger- man Puddlehund. This extremely intelligent dog, bred for over 2,000 years, was widely valued for retrieving, as is shown by the components of its name: pudeln, “splash in the water,” and Hund, “hound or dog.” Female poodles (and toy or miniature poodles as well) are among the smartest of dogs. Standard poo- dles attained their greatest popularity as pets in France, which led to them being called French poodles, although the Ger- mans probably developed them. They were one of the 25 or so breeds selected for training by the U.S. Army K-9 Corps during World War II.
