War of the Stray Dog. The War of the Stray Dog in 1925, a conflict not much more stupid than most wars, took place when a Greek soldier ran after his dog, which had strayed across the border in Macedonia. A Bulgarian sentry shot the soldier and Greek troops invaded Bulgaria in retaliation. Be- fore the League of Nations intervened over 50 men were killed. Almost as foolish was the Emu War. This took place in 1935 when west Australian farmers, enraged at ostrichlike emus trampling their wheat fields, demanded government help. The government sent troops with machine guns after the birds, which led the soldiers on a wild chase through the back coun- try for over a month. Twelve emus were killed and several sol- diers injured. |
