词汇 | waste not want not |
词源 | waste not, want not. A proverb that dates back only to about the late 1800s, so far as is known. However, at least one source attributed the saying to a poem by one Rowland Howard, about whom little is known. Howard wrote a poem, published in Pe- terson’s Magazine (1876), that seems to play with maxims and is entitled “You Never Miss The Water.” Waste not, want not, is a maxim I would teach Let your watchword be dispatch, and practice what you preach; Do not let your chances like sunbeams pass you by, For you never miss the water till the well runs dry. |
