Washington. Washington is the most popular place name in the United States, recorded in the nation’s capital, Washington, D.C., the state of Washington, at least 29 counties, and numer- ous towns. Washington State, the only state named for an American, was admitted to the union on February 22, 1889, appropriately on George Washington’s birthday. Other terms honoring the “Father of his country,” first in war, first in peace, first in the hearts of his countrymen, are the bird of Washington (the American eagle), the American Fabius (see fabian tac- tics), Washingtonia (a California palm tree), the Washington thorn, the Washington lily, and Washington pie. A George Wash- ington, for an honest person, derives from the famous cherry- tree story apparently invented by M. L. (Parson) Weems in his biography of the first president written in about 1800.
