词汇 | watered stock |
词源 | watered stock. To water a stock is to increase its number of shares without increasing the value of its assets; it is thus diluted or watered down. According to one old story, the expression originated with Wall Street speculator Daniel Drew, who was a cattle dealer after the Civil War. Drew sold his cattle by weight, of course, and did so immediately after they finished drinking a large quantity of water. |
