Tin Pan Alley. The original Tin Pan Alley was and is located between 48th and 52nd Streets on Seventh Avenue in New York City, an area where many music publishers, recording stu- dios, composers, and arrangers have offices. The place was probably named for the tinny sound of the cheap, much-abused pianos in music publishers’ offices there, or for the constant noise emanating from the area, which sounded like the bang- ing of tin pans to some. Tin Pan Alley, the term first recorded in 1914, today means any place where popular music is published, and can even stand for popular music itself. |
