hard up. When the weather was bad at sea Hard up the helm! was the order given and the tiller had to be put up as far as pos- sible to the windward in order to turn the ship’s head into the wind. These words came to mean “to weather the storm as best you can” and then took on the meaning of being short of money or some other necessity—that is, the condition of someone weathering a “storm.” |
