hard-shelled Baptist. Often called simply a “hardshell,” but in both cases a strict Baptist who proclaims hellfire. Such a Baptist can be a member of the Primitive Baptist Church or an Old-School (Antimissionary) Baptist, a Baptist who judges everyone very strictly by his beliefs and rules, even himself in many cases. “What I don’t like about hardshells, they think eve- rybody but them is goin’ t’ hell—even the dead little babies,” wrote Carl Carmer in Stars Fell on Alabama (1934). |
