commute. The verb to commute developed as a back forma- tion from the noun commutation at about the time of the Civil War—Americans were commuting to work on the train even at that early date. Commute later became the word for a railroad ticket, a shortening of “commutation ticket.” Commute has its roots in the Latin commutare, to change, thus someone com- muting is changing from one place to another. |
