词源 | give someone the gate. Giving someone the gate, “firing him, showing him the door,” has been American slang since at least 1921, when it first appeared in print. There is some precedent for it, however, in the old English phrase to give or grant the gate to, that is, to let someone pass through the castle gate and out to the road, which the O.E.D. traces back to 1440. The American term is of course negative, but ironic use of the earli- er give the gate to could have inspired it. |
