词汇 | give him jesse |
词源 | give him Jesse. Still heard infrequently, give him Jesse means “give him hell.” A 19th-century expression of obscure origins, it has been credited to the 1856 presidential campaign slogan of General John C. Frémont, “Give them Jessie!”, which referred to his wife Jessie. But Jesse was used earlier than this and proba- bly stems from the biblical “rod out of the stem of Jesse” men- tioned in Isaiah. |
