The full quotation from Patrick Henry in the 1775 Virginia provincial convention was supposedly, “Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God! I know not what course others may take, but as for me, give me liberty or give me death.” The last seven words constitute the first quotation millions of American schoolchildren have learned over the past two centuries, but there is no record that Patrick Henry ever spoke them, and they may have been invent- ed by Henry’s biographer William Wirt 41 years later.
