词汇 | parsley |
词源 | parsley. “Parsley grows for the wicked, but not for the just,” according to an old English proverb. Parsley takes its name ul- timately from the Greek petroselinon for the herb. This member of the celery family began earning its shady reputation even be- fore the Romans, who wore curly-leaved parsley garlands in their hair not only because they were attractive but because they believed that nibbling on parsley sprigs enabled one to drink more wine without becoming drunk. The Greeks crowned winning athletes with parsley at their Nemean and Isthmian games, and used the herb as a flavoring. The Romans fed it to their horses on the theory that it made them swift. The plant is described by Seneca, who notes that the tempting sor- ceress Medea gathered parsley and other forbidden herbs by moonlight. |
