词汇 | topiary |
词源 | topiary. Topiary is the clipping and training of plants like yew and arborvitae into fantastic shapes such as peacocks, ele- phants, foxes, birds, and grotesque geometrical figures. The word itself comes to us from the Latin word topia, akin to “ar- tificial landscape.” The Romans were expert at the art or craft, as were the English in Tudor times, and topiary is still far more common in England than in America. Alexander Pope de- nounced topiary, inventing a mock garden catalog description of: “Adam and Eve in Yew, Adam a little shattered by the fall of the tree of knowledge in the great storm: Eve and the Serpent very flourishing . . . Divers eminent modern poets, in bays, somewhat blighted, to be disposed of, a pennyworth.” But to- piary can be used effectively. Examples often cited are the topi- ary at the Alhambra in Granada and Italian gardens at Flor- ence and Rome. |
