The term sad sack, for “a maladjusted, blundering, unlucky soldier,” likable but always in trouble, was widely popu- larized by George Baker’s comic strip “Sad Sack,” which ap- peared in several World War II military publications and later appeared in many newspapers. However, the words were American collegiate slang during the 1930s, their origin unknown. |
