toilet. In America, the term refers to what the British call the water closet. The word comes from the French toilette, which originally meant a “little cloth.” This became the British name for the cloth used to cover a dressing table, then meant the ta- ble itself, and was finally used for the dressing room in which the dressing table was located. It took over four centuries, but Americans ultimately used toilet for the john in the room most often used for dressing or making one’s toilet. See also crap; john thomas. |
