词汇 tohu-bohu
词源
tohu-bohu. I like the sound of this unusual old word, which derives from the Hebrew lamentation Thohu-wa-bhôhū. It means emptiness and despair, confusion, formlessness, chaos itself, and unusual as it is, great writers such as Rabelais, Vol- taire, Purchas, Browning, and Gladstone have employed it. The original Hebrew words are translated in the Bible in the second verse of the first chapter of Genesis: “And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the earth.” Wrote one 19th-century author: “The world is a tohu-bohu of confusion and folly.”
