bowing. Bowing, to show someone respect, derives from an Old English word meaning the same, and the custom is record- ed as far back as Beowulf. While Westerners commonly bend the neck and uncover the head when bowing, people in several other cultures uncover the feet to show their respect. As Brewer explains, this is because “with us the chief act of investiture is crowning or placing a cap on the head; but in the East it is putting on the slippers.” |
