词汇 | it-s not funny |
词源 | it’s not funny. His early tragedies often had poetic power, but British poet laureate Nicholas Rowe (1674–1718) had no co- medic talent. The author usually confined himself to what he called “she-tragedies,” about victimized women, yet he once tried his hand at writing something funny: The Biter (1704). He sat in the theater laughing hilariously throughout the premiere of his play, but no one else in the audience uttered a single laugh or smiled a smile all evening. Rowe never again wrote a comedy. |
