aspirin. Originally a trademark of the German Bayer Aspirin Company, aspirin is now a generic term and needn’t be capital- ized. The famous analgesic’s name was coined by German sci- entist Charles Witthauer in 1899, aspirin being a shortening of the German Acetylirte Spirsaure (acetylated spiraeic acid), plus the chemical suffix in. By 1915, after many headaches, Bayer had lost its battle for the trademark in court. |
