词汇 | in the nick |
词源 | in the nick. To Americans in the nick of time means “just in time, not a minute too early.” One theory holds that the word nick here refers to the notches made in a tally, a piece of wood used for reckoning. This doesn’t, however, explain other uses of nick. In Britain, for example, in the nick means to be “in the pink, in good shape,” while Australians use nick to mean “nude,” as in “She posed in the nick.” |
