Ready for anything, well prepared, heavily armed. “Loaded for b-ar,” as the expression was often pro- nounced, probably goes back to American pioneers hunting in the forests where they had to carry guns loaded with ammuni- tion powerful enough to kill a bear, the most dangerous beast they might encounter. The phrase was first recorded, however, in 1875. Today it can also mean “very drunk.” |
