词汇 lobotomy
词源
lobotomy; lobotomobile. Lobotomy, the practice of surgical incision into the brain’s frontal lobe to treat various mental disorders, is rarely performed today, but was common in the early 1950s, accounting for about 5,000 operations a year. Ac- cording to a New York Times (April 29, 2004) article by Randy Kennedy there was even “a real neurologist, Dr. Walter Free- man, who pioneered outpatient lobotomies in the late 1940s and, before he lost his surgical privileges in the late ’60s, drove around the country promoting the operation in a camper van he called the lobotomobile.” American director Richard Ledes’s film A Hole in One (2004) treats the subject of lobotomies. Probably the most famous novel and movie treating the sub- ject is Ken Kesey’s One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1962) in which the rebellious joyful character McMurphy, a patient in a mental institution, is reduced by a lobotomy to blank passivity.
