As president of Ecuador, Gabriel Garcia Moreno (1821–75) became obsessed with the idea of Roman Catholic supremacy; in fact he dedicated Ecuador to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. A tall, severe man who was an excel- lent administrator, he was considered a fanatic despot by his liberal opponents. He died on the Capitol steps, killed by Liber- al Party assassins who stabbed him and split his skull with a machete. |
