choke pear; chokecherry. Because of its rough, astringent taste, which could make a person choke, this fruit was called a choke pear. Later the term was applied, figuratively, to anything that stopped someone from speaking, such as biting sarcasm or an unanswerable argument. The wild black cherry is sometimes called the chokecherry for similar reasons, and there is a berry called the chokeberry. See choke-pear; pears of agony. |
