naught; naughty. Naughty has come to mean bad in a minor way, somewhat improper or indecent, mischievous, as in “a naughty child.” But in Middle English it was a much stronger word meaning wicked or immoral, deriving from the Old En- glish nauiht, which meant “nothing” and also gave us the word naught for zero. Dr. Johnson silenced two spinsters who com- plimented him for the omission of “naughty words” in his great dictionary with the comment: “What! my dears! then you have been looking for them!” |
