nassau. In a golf game, a nassau is an 18-hole match in which one point is given to each of the players having the lowest scores for the first nine holes, the second nine holes, and the entire round. The scoring and betting system is not named for the seaport capital of Nassau in the Bahamas, as is often said. It is actually named after the Nassau County Golf Course at Glen Cove in Nassau County, Long Island, New York, where it was developed in 1901 by players who didn’t want to lose by embar- rassingly high scores. |
