词源	verme. The verme is a legendary fish of the Ganges, which was said to be able to reach up out of the Indian river, seize ele- phants in its jaws and destroy them. The fish was named for the Latin vermes, “worm,” perhaps by error, perhaps because the fish was thought to be eellike. The word is first recorded in 1572.
