Verrazano-Narrows Bridge. This 1964 suspension bridge connects Brooklyn and Staten Island over New York Bay. Its 4,260-foot center span is the longest in North America. The Verrazano, as it is usually called by New Yorkers, is named for another Italian navigator and explorer, Giovanni da Verrazano (c. 1480–1529), who sailed in New York waters 85 years before Henry Hudson. Verrazano was later killed by Natives while ex- ploring the West Indies. See america; columbia; hudson river. |
