Bovril; vril. The well-known trade name Bovril for a concen- trated essence of beef has an unusual ancestry. Bovril is composed of the Latin bovis, ox, and vril, which is an invented literary word. The British novelist Edward George Bulwer- Lytton (1803–73) coined the word vril in his novel The Coming Race (1871), describing it as an “electric fluid called Vril, which was capable of being raised and disciplined into the mightiest agency of all forms of matter.” This seemed perfect for the man- ufacturer of the beef essence in 1887, and he quickly adopted it as the last half of his product’s name. It has been suggested, too, that vril has a linguistic connection with virility—all the better as far as the company was concerned.
