Although the name is featured in Stephen Vincent Benét’s “The Devil and Daniel Webster” (1937) as a name for the devil, Scratch or Old Scratch is a much older term, deriving from Scandanavian skratta, “monster” or “goblin.” Other “Old” names for the devil include Old Nick, Old Harry, Old Gentleman, and Old Serpent, but the origin of these cogno- mens is unknown. |
