fall guy. In American professional wrestling during the 1890s, just like today, many of the bouts were fixed, with a loser picked beforehand. This may have resulted in the term fall guy being applied to the loser, the wrestler who took a fall, the words later coming to mean any person who takes the blame for the actions of others. But there is no proof of this theory. The earliest quotation using the term fall guy, in 1904, links it to the underworld, and even before that in 1893 fall is recorded as a criminal arrest or conviction, making the wrestling con- nection seem unlikely. |
