locoweed. Various plants of the genera Astragalus and Ox- ytropis native to the southwestern United States are called “lo- coweed” (from the Spanish loco, “insane”) because when eaten by horses, cattle, and sheep they cause irregular behavior, in- cluding weakness, impaired vision, and paralysis. In the West a person who acts crazy is sometimes said to be “locoed,” that is, crazed as if from eating locoweed. |
