Piedmont rice. An old story holds that Thomas Jefferson stole seeds of Piedmont rice while traveling in the Piedmont re- gion of Italy and smuggled them home in his pockets, despite the fact that Italy wanted to continue its monopoly on this type of rice and had made the crime of stealing the seeds punishable by death. Jefferson’s introduction of the rice was important be- cause Piedmont rice can be grown without irrigation. See carolina rice; wild rice. |
