词源 | Hawkeye State. A nickname for Iowa dating back to at least 1839, when Hawkeye described an Iowan. Candidates for the original Hawkeye after whom Iowans were named include a great Indian chief; newspaper editor James Gardiner Edwards, known as “Old Hawkeye”; and Natty Bumppo, hero of James Fenimore Cooper’s The Last of the Mohicans (1826), whose nickname was Hawkeye. |
