词汇 | immelmann turn |
词源 | Immelmann turn. Sergeant York, Eddie Rickenbacker, Black Jack Pershing, the Red Baron . . . not many men are remem- bered of the millions who fought and the millions who died in “the war to end all wars.” But World War I German ace Max Immelmann (1890–1916) is one of them, if only because he is the eponym behind the eponymous term Immelmann turn, or Immelmann, a maneuver he developed (consisting of a half loop and a roll) that enabled him to take evasive action in such a way that his plane quickly secured an offensive position. Im- melmann won many of his 15 victories with his turn, as did other aces of the two world wars. He died at age 26 like the Red Baron, when his plane broke apart in midair, perhaps as a result of his acrobatic tactic. See red baron. |
