词汇 | nahuatl |
词源 | Nahuatl. The language of the Aztecs that is cited as a source of many words treated in these pages. Nahuatl is far from a dead language and is spoken in many interior regions in Mexi- co. For that matter, the Mayan language lives on in Guatemala and other Central American countries. According to Mario Pei’s What’s in a Word (1968): “In South America, Quichua, the tongue of the Incas, is still used almost exclusively by some six million natives in a broad band from Ecuador, across Peru and Bolivia to northern Argentina.” Perhaps one day centuries hence, when the rest of the world has worn itself out, these pa- tient, once-great civilizations will rise again. |
