According to Mario Pei’s What’s in a Word (1968): “In South America, Quichua, the tongue of the Incas, is still used almost exclusively by some six million natives in a broad band from Ecuador, across Peru and Bolivia to northern Argentina.” Perhaps one day centuries hence, when the rest of the world has worn itself out, these pa- tient, once-great civilizations will rise again.
