Linguist Mario Pei says in What’s in a Word (1968) that in the American South a greater number of first names can be both female and male than in any other area of the country. Such names include Pearl, Marion, Leslie, Bev- erly, Kim, and Dana. Although these names are all used for both males and females in other sections as well, they are so used with more frequency in the South.
