词汇 | idaho baked potato |
词源 | Idaho baked potato. Very few potatoes are named and known for their place of origin. First known as the Early Rose potato, a variety discovered by the great horticulturist Luther Burbank in his New England garden in 1872, this famed versa- tile tuber went through some 40 years of breeding before it be- came known as the Idaho. Strangely enough, this well-known name was made famous by a New York department store “tast- er.” William Titon, better known as Titon the Taster, worked 60 years for Macy’s and was the store’s final authority on all gro- ceries, wines, and liquors. Among other accomplishments, Titon discovered the Idaho potato in 1926 while buying apples for Macy’s and promoted it until the spud’s name became syn- onymous with baked potato, for which Idaho’s governor wrote a letter of thanks to the store. |
