cabbages and kings. This expression meaning “odds and ends,” “anything and everything,” was used by O. Henry as the title for his first book of stories. It comes from Lewis Carroll’s Through the Looking Glass:
“The time has come,” the Walrus said,
“To talk of many things:
Of shoes and ships—and sealing wax—
Of cabbages—and kings—
And why the sea is boiling hot—
And whether pigs have wings.”
