hypnotism. The word hypnotism was invented by Scottish Dr. James Briad (c. 1795–1860), who experimented with mes- merism. Briad wanted to describe the sleeplike state of his sub- jects and coined the term neurohypnotism from the name of Hypnos, the Greek god of sleep, this unwieldy word soon shortened to hypnotism. Hypnotism was also called Briadism in Briad’s time, but that term isn’t often heard today. |
