词汇 laodician
词源
Laodician. The word Laodician—usually meaning someone lukewarm or indifferent in religion or politics—derives from the name of a Syrian city. Its ruins can be seen today close to the Gonjele station on the Anatolian railway. Little is known of Laodicea’s history, but it was one of the earliest homes of Chris- tianity. Yet the Church of Laodicea grew lazy and indifferent, leading to its chastisement in the Bible. This biblical rebuke led to the word Laodicean being applied to all people indifferent to religion, with a Laodicean attitude remaining a major problem to churches today. Ultimately the word came to mean a person unconcerned about politics or even life itself. The city of Laodi- cea seems to have been named by Antiochus I after his wife Laodice.
