词汇 | lark |
词源 | lark. A frolic, an escapade, a merry carefree adventure; or something very easy, as in “That test was a lark.” The word probably doesn’t come from the vigorous, cheerful actions of the bird called a lark, as is often stated. Lark more likely derives from the Saxon lac, meaning “sport.” Nobel Prize–winning novelist Saul Bellow wrote a play entitled The Last Analysis (1964), which was a quick failure at the box office. “It started as a lark,” he said, “but it turned out as an ostrich.” See ostrich. |
