The word language, first recorded in about 1290, has its roots in the Latin lingua, “tongue.” At least 2,796 differ- ent languages are spoken on earth, these divided into about 60 families, with Chinese having the most speakers (1 billion) and English the second most (300 million, with an additional 200 million speaking it as a second language).
