Nix is probably a British borrowing from the German nichts, “nothing.” Meaning “nothing” or “no,” it dates back to the late 18th century, when it is recorded as nichts in British slang, the word being spelt nix by 1812 at the latest. The expres- sion nix on that, “nothing doing,” is an Americanism first re- corded in 1902. The famous Variety headline STIX NIX HIX PIX widely popularized nix in America.
