词汇 regeneration
词源
regeneration. In its biological sense of to replace or renew an organ by formation of new tissue, regeneration (from the Latin regenerare, “to replace”) is limited in humans, restricted pri- marily to the healing of wounds, the regrowth of tissue in inter- nal organs, and the regrowth of hair and nails. However, among simpler animals the ability can be more extensive. The starfish is highly developed in this respect, thanks to a nervous system that one investigator has described as more complicated than the London telephone exchange. A starfish wounded in a fight has the ability to cast off its arm at any point. Not only can it grow a new arm when it loses one, but an entire new body will be regenerated if the ray cut from the old body contains a por- tion of the central disk. A marine biologist applied a strong electric current to a laboratory specimen and found to his amazement that all five arms walked away from the body. About 12 of 100 starfish collected will show one or more rays in the process of regeneration. See starfish.
