词汇 tiger lily
词源
tiger lily. This ubiquitous flower, often found on roadsides and in woods in the northeastern United States, originated in Japan or China. It takes its name from its orange and black colors. Ac- cording to a Korean legend, Lilium tigrinum was named when a magician-hermit changed his pet tiger into a flower he could keep in his garden. After the magician died, the tiger lily left the garden and journeyed all over the world searching for his friend, which is why tiger lilies are so widespread. There is no reason why tiger lilies should talk more than other flowers, except that Lewis Carroll made them so inclined in Through the Looking Glass. The tiger lilies there tell Alice that they talk all the time “when there’s anybody worth talking to.” They also offer a tip to people who’d like to hear their flowers talk. When Alice wants to know why she’s never heard flowers talk in other gardens, they explain, “In most gardens, they make the beds too soft—so that the flowers are always asleep.”
