thumb. The thumb is of course the thickest of the five fingers on the human hand, unless one takes the view that we do not have five fingers but four fingers and a thumb. In any case, the thumb, so important to the development of the human race, was thought to be a thick digit by our ancestors and it takes its name from the Old English thumba, thick or swollen.
